Biography
What`s he up to now?...

It`s a common question thrown up in conversation whenever news gets out that Tony is working on a new project.
Not surprisingly, for, although not well documented, Tony`s musical journey thus far has covered a lot of ground. Or should it be territories?
'Straying into other territory' is a phrase that does not sit well with Tony.
'I don`t know what all the fuss is about' Tony challenges, 'I`m just playing the guitar'

So what is he up to now?

Tony Rémy`s Blue Vibe - Jammin' at the 12 bar club is Tony`s latest release on Alltone Records. It features a lot of Tony playing the guitar.
As the title suggests, it is a collection of 'jams' using the blues as a foundation to play upon. It is an entirely improvised set with the only familiar, pre-conceived chords being references to Miles`s Back Seat Betty on track 2. Each track sounds remarkably well structured and very organic.
Each solo seems to tell a story. But what will his fans make of this set? '
It`s not like I`ve never played the blues before'
Indeed, anyone who`s seen Tony playing live will undoubtedly remember how tough and blue he can play. Well, here`s a whole album that has finally managed to capture Tony`s fire, his incredible energy and artistry. There is a vitality in his playing here that his earlier albums have only hinted at. This is very tough stuff.

'It`s always different in the studio. Why can`t we just get up and wail and worry about it next time around.' Tony is quoted in the album sleeve.
'Those other albums were largely about writing and producing as well as playing the guitar. It takes a live situation to really get me going as a player. The adrenaline, the crowd feedback, the band interaction and the challenge of creating something on the spot. It`s a buzz for me...and I try to make it a buzz for the audience.'

Tony is obviously very comfortable in this trio setting. He takes the lead and sets up each piece, throwing ideas up for the band to follow. He establishes the vibe for the piece and then takes the whole thing up a gear. The band instinctively follows. His solos build with astounding intensity and, several gears later, he is still pushing the band for more. The band grows with him to the inevitable climax until Tony nods the end and brings it back down.
'This set-up gives me complete freedom as a player. It is hard because the focus is on me all night, but I go exactly where the vibe takes me, and the band always manages to follow. They`re all incredible and instinctive players'.
This album doesn`t signal a departure from the more familiar jazz and fusion set up his fans and critics have become used to. It isn`t so much a new direction or path. It merely shows us in detail a little more of the whole Tony Rémy picture. Having said that, this album is bound to raise more questions about Tony`s musical direction. Tony`s future recordings will answer those questions.
'I got a lot of criticism in the past about doing too many different kinds of music...Well OK. This album is just about playing the guitar...so lets here them talk about that'.
'Jammin' at the 12 Bar Club' is what Tony Rémy's up to right now... so for now, enjoy the Blue Vibe.

Tony Remy...a very brief history

Tony started his professional music career in 1986, although he was on the Jazz scene earlier. He recalls,
'I had a band called Cube 60 in '84 with Winston Clifford, Joe Bashorun and Nick Cohen. We were crazy about Miles Davis, Weather Report, Steps, The Brecker Brothers, so we were writing and playing that stuff. I also had a rock band called Secretary Bailey. Then in '85, Cube 60 developed into Desperately Seeking Fusion with Patrick Clahar, Jason Rebello and Julian Crampton. That was really my first outing as bandleader'.

Tony enjoyed high praise with his jazz/world band 'Lateral Thinking', and again with his acoustic jazz quintet and more recently for his acoustic project with string quartet 'Stringology' with which he created the soundtrack to the Mike Leigh film 'Career Girls' now available on CD.

Tony has toured and recorded with a wide range of musicians which include: Courtney Pine, Jason Rebello, Julian Joseph, Freddy Hubbard, Jean Toussaint, Steve Williamson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Lenny White, Omar, Steps Ahead, Gary Barlow, Simply Red, US3, Cleveland Watkiss, Pee Wee Ellis, Ronnie Laws, Nelson Rangell, Connor Reeves, Maysa Leak , down to the bone, Matt Bianco and Karen Ramirez.

Tony released his first solo album 'BOOF' in 1993 on the American Jazz/fusion label GRP.
Following an unhappy period and change of label, Tony's second album 'Metamorfollow-G' was released on Alltone Records in 1997.

Tony's playing draws on many different guitar styles. Guitarists like John Scofield, Hiram Bullock, Mike Stern, George Benson, Jimi Hendrix and BB King have all contributed to shaping Tony Rémy's style.
