The very first BBC Radio Jazz Awards was a memorable event for Jean and Alltone Records with the award for Best CD going to Jean for his album 'The street above the underground' . Jean was delighted to receive the award from his musical associate and long time friend Cleveland Watkiss. In his presentation speech, Cleveland drew attention to the breadth of music on Jean's CD calling it 'amazing'. Later during the ceremony Jean and his 'Nazaire' band took to the stage and performed two stunning tracks from the album, '2 Miles' and the classic 'People make the world go round'. Jean, Tony Remy and Byron Wallen were the featured soloists and were all on top form, as were the silky vocals of Noel McKoy. When asked what the award meant to him, Jean replied 'Winning this BBC award for Best CD is very encouraging. The next album will do more than live up to the last'. I for one can't wait to hear the next CD. |
